How to opt out of every registered data broker

A data broker is a business that knowingly collects and sells to third parties the personal information of consumers it has no direct relationship with (Cal. Civ. Code § 1798.99.80). Since 2020 they have had to register in California every year, and since 2024 the registry is run by the California Privacy Protection Agency, which publishes what each broker declared: website, contact email, the page where you exercise your rights, whether it collects minors' data or precise geolocation, and how many deletion requests it received and honored. These 765 guides are generated from that public registry (2024, 2025 and 2026 registrations, cppa.ca.gov, read Sep 30, 2026); for each broker we also fetched its homepage once and recorded an opt-out page only when we found one on its own site (543 brokers, 428 verified with a second fetch). Where none was found, the guide tells you to send the request to the email the broker registered (765 have one).
Coverage: California registry only. Texas (Bus. & Com. Code ch. 510, registry at the Secretary of State), Oregon (HB 2052, Division of Financial Regulation) and Vermont (9 V.S.A. § 2446, Secretary of State) also require registration; their lookups were unavailable to automated readers on Sep 30, 2026 (Texas portal returned a server error; Oregon and Vermont searches sit behind a CAPTCHA), so those registrations are not included yet. Most brokers register in California whether or not they are based there.
Your rights against a registered data broker
- Opt out of sale or sharing (Cal. Civ. Code § 1798.120): the broker must stop selling or sharing your personal information no later than 15 business days after receiving the request (Cal. Code Regs. tit. 11, § 7026), and may not demand identity verification to accept it.
- Delete (§ 1798.105) and know (§§ 1798.100, 1798.110, 1798.115): the broker must confirm receipt within 10 business days and respond within 45 calendar days, extendable once by a further 45 days if it tells you why (§ 1798.130(a)(2)).
- One request to all of them: since January 1, 2026, California residents can file a single deletion request through the state's Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP); registered brokers must begin processing DROP requests on August 1, 2026 and re-check every 45 days (Cal. Civ. Code § 1798.99.86).
- Outside California: Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas, Oregon and a dozen other states give residents opt-out and deletion rights with 45-day deadlines; the request letter below cites the law that applies to you.
