Threats count under federal law. Section 2 of the TAKE IT DOWN Act makes it a crime to intentionally threaten to publish an intimate image or digital forgery of an identifiable person to intimidate, coerce, extort or cause mental distress, and separate federal statutes cover sextortion. Threats can be reported to local police and to the FBI at ic3.gov; keep screenshots of the messages with dates and the account used. Preventively, StopNCII.org lets adults hash images on their own device so partner platforms such as Meta, TikTok, Reddit and Bumble block matching uploads; if you were under 18 in the images, NCMEC's Take It Down service does the same. If anything is posted, the platform must remove it within 48 hours of a valid request under Section 3 of the Act, and the FTC takes complaints at takeitdown.ftc.gov if it does not.
