The TAKE IT DOWN Act (Public Law 119-12, signed May 19, 2025) does two things. It makes knowingly publishing intimate images of an identifiable person without consent, including realistic AI "digital forgeries," a federal crime. And since May 19, 2026, Section 3 requires covered platforms (social media, image and video hosts, messaging, gaming and dating apps that host user content) to run a plain-language notice-and-removal process. Once a platform receives a valid request, it must remove the image and known identical copies within 48 hours. A valid request needs your signature (electronic is fine), enough information to locate the image, a brief good-faith statement that it was published without your consent, and contact details. You can send it yourself or through someone acting for you. If the platform fails, the FTC enforces the law and takes complaints at takeitdown.ftc.gov.
