The CAN-SPAM Act (15 U.S.C. § 7704) requires every commercial email to contain a working opt-out mechanism that stays active for at least 30 days after sending, and the sender must honor your opt-out within 10 business days. It cannot charge a fee, demand more than your email address, make you log in, or sell or transfer your address once you have opted out. The FTC's compliance guide confirms these rules, and violations can bring civil penalties of up to $53,088 per email. Individuals cannot sue under CAN-SPAM, but the FTC, state attorneys general and internet service providers can. Forward the messages to spam@uce.gov, file at reportfraud.ftc.gov, and use your mail provider's report-spam button, which also trains filters. Use unsubscribe links only in email from senders you recognize; in suspicious mail they can be phishing. A written opt-out request creates a dated record.
