48-hour removal

The 48-hour removal rule is the TAKE IT DOWN Act's deadline: upon receiving a valid removal request, a covered platform must remove the reported intimate visual depiction as soon as possible and not later than 48 hours after receipt, and must make reasonable efforts to remove known identical copies. The clock runs from receipt of a complete, valid request, not from when a moderator opens it. Failure to comply is treated as an unfair or deceptive act or practice enforceable by the Federal Trade Commission, which can seek civil penalties and orders against noncompliant platforms, including nonprofits.
